Read MoreNew York Giants head coach Joe Judge preaches accountability and personal responsibility, he demands hard work and he won’t allow any me-first players on his field.
It’s not quite Bill Belichickian, but it sure is close. And what else would you expect? Judge is a guy who came through the Nick Saban, Belichick coaching tree.
Defensive tackle Danny Shelton, who spent two seasons with the New England Patriots from 2018-2019, is a player who has now experienced both sides of that coin. And in his brief time with the Giants, can already attest that the environment is very similar to that of the Patriots’.
“I think it’s very similar,” Shelton told reporters on Friday.
“I think Joe’s just a great guy. I mean, he’s the same person, really. He always has energy. He always has that fieriness about him. He’s like one of the guys that you just want to play for, you don’t want to let him down.”
Shelton recalled a time during his stint with New England in which he was on Judge’s field goal team and made a few mistakes. That situation played out exactly as you might have expected.
“I was on a field goal for him and I messed up a couple of times. I hated that I did that and tried to get back on field goal and tried to prove myself,” Shelton said.
Did he ever make it back on the field goal unit?
“I’m here to play where he needs me, so I’m excited to have this opportunity,” Shelton said with a smile, avoiding the question.
In addition to his familiarity with Judge, Shelton says the transition has been relatively easy because every player on the team buys into Judge’s system and message. That has allowed for a very energetic and optimistic locker-room.
“Really familiarity and just me knowing the expectations. Knowing that we have to put in work. Knowing why I’m here, why the rest of us are here. Everybody has a role and everybody has to come to work with the same mindset of doing your job. I feel like it’s just familiarity, being comfortable here and made it easier to be comfortable,” SHelton added. “I just like being out here. Honestly, it’s the players for me. Seeing everybody lock into the system. Young, high energy and it’s just a great feeling.”
Now, if Judge starts winning like Belichick, Shelton & Co. are really going to love it in East Rutherford.
